Arts & Humanities Department

Stage Crew (Temporary/Seasonal)
Application deadline: Until filled-Arts & Humanities/Smoky Hill River Festival -Duties: Responsible for assisting the Stage Manager in all aspects of set-up, equipment & service to the entertainers; responsible to the Stage Manager of Stage II, Stage Manager of the Stein Stage, Sound Crew & other Festival staff persons in carrying out their duties. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Previous work as a Stage Hand at the Smoky Hill River Festival or other comparable work is required. Requirements: Must be minimum of 16 years of age or older; must have an ability to lift 75 lbs.; must be able to withstand extremes in temperature, including wind & rain & maintain a cheerful & helpful attitude throughout the entire event; valid Kansas driver’s license required. Hours: 40 hours from June 7-10, 2018. Pay: $7.50/hr.

Fire Department

Firefighter /Paramedic
Applications accepted for hiring pool-Fire Department- Duties: Provides advanced life support services & renders medical treatment in emergency situations; engages in fire suppression & fire prevention activities to protect & safeguard lives & property. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Certification Requirements: National Registry or Kansas Paramedic certification & maintain certification including current Advanced Pediatric Life Support Certification & ACLS; Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within prior year; current written Fire Service Exam with a score of 70% or better within the prior two years; Firefighter 1 & 2 with Hazmat Operations certifications in the State of Kansas or equivalent International Fire Service Training Association with International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Certification; NIMS 100,200,700,800. Firefighter/EMT
Applications accepted for hiring pool-Fire Department-Duties: Responds to fire alarms & other emergency calls to protect life & property by combating, extinguishing & preventing fires; gives basic life support care to sick or injured persons; participates in fire prevention programs, inspection, training activities, maintenance of fire & EMS apparatus & equipment & stations. Parks & Recreation Department

Custodian I
Application deadline: TH 04/26/2018-Parks & Recreation/Buildings-Duties: Performs janitorial duties inside & outside city buildings & other public facilities; minor construction & maintenance of facilities & outdoor spaces; maintains equipment & materials; performs visual checks for repairs on all mechanical systems, buildings, & grounds; washes windows & walls; dusts & polishes furniture, sills, blinds, woodwork, light fixtures, etc.; sweeps & scrubs hard surface floors; vacuums, shampoos, removes spots & stains in carpets; replaces light bulbs & fluorescent tubes; empties & cleans waste receptacles; cleans & disinfects restrooms & kitchens; cleans grounds by picking up paper & trash; must raise, lower & maintain flags; shovels snow as assigned; locks & unlocks doors, windows & security systems; maintains inventory of cleaning equipment & supplies. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Minimum of one year experience with custodial/janitorial related work; one year experience stripping, buffing & burnishing hard surface floors; must be self-motivated & be able to work with little to no supervision. Requirements: Must live within 40-minute drive time; must possess a valid Kansas driver's license. Hours: Full-time with benefits; Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. includes occasional evening & weekend work. Pay: $9.88-11.07/hr.

Police Department

Police Officer
Application deadline: Until filled-Police Department-Duties: Protecting, serving, & working with Salina’s diverse citizenry & enforcing the law while protecting the constitutional rights of all. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Qualifications include: United States citizen; twenty-one (21) years of age at time of appointment; no felony convictions, domestic violence related conviction, or other serious misdemeanor convictions; good physical condition; eyesight: 20/100 correctable to 20/20, no upper acuity limit with contact lenses; ability to obtain Kansas Police Officer certification within one year of appointment. Selection process includes: Written test, two assessment interviews, psychological evaluation, computer voice stress analyzer examination, thorough background check, physical examination, & drug screen. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Successful candidates are prohibited from smoking or using tobacco products at any time, on or off the job. Written test is held the 3rd Saturday of each month. Starting pay: $42,411/yr.

Dispatcher
Application deadline: TH 05/03/2018-Police Department-Duties: Responsible for dispatching all police, sheriff, fire, & ambulance operations in the city & county; operates a two-way communications system; monitors a computerized emergency system; types a variety of data into a computerized database. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: In-service training program; typing speed 40 WPM minimum. Requirements: Must be minimum twenty-one (21) years of age; must live within 40 minutes response time; must successfully complete in-service training program in communications related curriculum; must pass selection process that includes assessment interviews, psychological evaluation, computer voice stress analyzer examination, & thorough background checks. Hours: Twelve hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with every other weekend off. Starting pay: $15.35/hr. Public Works Department

Engineering Technician
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Engineering-Duties: Performs technical engineering drafting, design, surveying & construction inspection for wide variety of engineering projects; responsible for implementation & maintenance of pavement management system; requires ability to effectively assess condition of both asphalt & concrete pavements; prioritizes locations in need of maintenance, & suggests appropriate maintenance options that best increases the lifespan of the pavement with cost effective solutions; performs technical engineering drafting, design, surveying & construction inspections; completes administrative support; maintains records & asset management; customer service performed daily. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D; two years engineering courses or related engineering technology work. Experience: Two years’ experience in engineering technical work & drafting preferred. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license; must possess a valid Kansas Class B driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement, or obtain within three months of appointment. Pay: $14.61-25.66/hr.

Landfill Operator II
Application deadline: TH 04/26/2018-Duties: Skilled work in horizontal construction; performs duties in the operation of the City of Salina’s Municipal Landfill; provides over-site of the facility & crew in the absence of a supervisor; operates compactors, dozers, motor graders, front-end loaders, self-propelled scrapers & similar equipment at the municipal solid waste landfill & in various assignments; performs manual labor; assists in planning fill cells; moves, levels, compacts & covers solid waste at landfill; looks for & prevents hazardous waste from entering into landfill; mows grounds; maintains landfill roads; extinguishes fires at landfill; performs maintenance checks on equipment; makes repairs to equipment; welds; prepares minimal records of own activities, including burial logs & special wastes; operates the scale house as assigned. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Three years of progressively responsible construction & maintenance work operating light & medium equipment with one year of experience operating heavy equipment; basic computer skills; ability to operate office machines such as credit card machines. Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL), or obtain within three months from date of appointment. Hours: Shifts rotate quarterly. Pay: $14.61-23.34/hr.

Sanitation Worker / Driver
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Sanitation-Duties: Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of refuse and/or recycling materials; operates medium equipment & heavy duty trucks. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: One year sanitation work or experience with small trucks & light equipment in construction, maintenance, or related activities; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; heavy manual labor & outside work experience desired. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement; must be able to perform heavy manual labor & run designated routes; must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Work Type: Heavy manual labor, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds for force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Pay: $13.25-21.15/hr.

Street Maintenance Worker
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Streets & Traffic-Duties: Performs a variety of unskilled & semi-skilled manual labor in the construction & maintenance of streets, storm sewers, buildings & other municipal facilities; drives various types of trucks & operates light construction equipment; lays & rakes asphalt; performs & assists in carpentry, including construction of forms, concrete work, painting & minor welding; responds to weather & other emergencies. Sanitation Worker I
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Sanitation- Duties: Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of solid waste; operates hydraulic equipment; loads sanitation, yard waste and/or recycling trucks; removes debris & trash from alleys & streets; maintains sanitation building; services & washes trucks & equipment; picks up, delivers & repairs refuse carts; interacts with public. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Heavy manual labor & outside work experience desired. Requirements: Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; must be able to perform heavy manual labor & run designated routes; must be eighteen (18) years of age or older; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Hours: Monday – Friday; shift begins at 7:00 a.m. Pay: $12.04-19.23/hr.

Traffic Control Laborer (Temporary/Seasonal)
Application deadline: TH 04/26/2018-Public Works/Streets & Traffic-Duties: Performs maintenance on city traffic control devices including painting, weed control, trash removal, & washing vehicles. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: Previous painting, weed removal, car washing, or related work preferred. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license; minimum of 18 yrs. of age. Hours: June–August Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Pay: $10.00/hr.

Utilities Department

Water Plant Supervisor
Application deadline: Until filled-Duties: Supervises the operation & maintenance of the City of Salina’s Water Treatment Plant. Education: High school diploma or equivalent; must obtain Kansas Class IV Water Supply System Operator Certificate within one year of KDHE exam eligibility. Experience: Five years of experience in lime softening water treatment or related work preferred; two years supervisory experience. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Pay: $19.55-31.20/hr.

Utility Worker I
Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities-Duties: Performs semi-skilled & skilled labor in the maintenance & operation of a water distribution & transmission system/wastewater collection system; performs minor electrical & mechanical maintenance; maintains wastewater pumps, motors & controls; installs, repairs, cleans, taps, fits & inspects wastewater/water pipelines; installs & repairs wastewater/water valves, manholes, & fire hydrants; installs & repairs chemical feed pumps & piping; performs custodial work such as cleaning, painting, lawn mowing & snow removal.
