PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION & ENFORCEMENT COORDINATOR
Application deadline: TH 04/02/2020-Public Works/Sanitation-Duties: Oversees the education & enforcement of sanitation guidelines; performs inspections of refuse routes; meets or speaks with customers to help ensure successful collection operations & compliance of cart placement & waste disposal requirements; writes grant applications; designs & develops educational materials & advertising for the public using a variety of media regarding solid waste collection, recycling & related environmental programs; represents the City of Salina’s refuse, recycling & other environmental initiatives at public promotional events. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.; college degree preferred with emphasis in human relations, communications, environmental science or a related field; must be able to acquire & maintain KDHE approved 24 hour-training per K.A.R. 28-29-1102e certification for working at a HHW facility. Experience: Two (2) years’ public relations, education, teaching, or training activities; skilled in electronic media & computer applications. Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Hours: Monday – Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Schedule may vary). Starting pay: $16.04-17.97/hr. (Full pay range: $16.04-25.60/hr.)

MAINTENANCE WORKER II
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Flood Control- Duties: Performs a variety of skilled & semi-skilled work in the operation, repair & maintenance of the levee system & ancillary flood control structures & facilities; operates, services & maintains light & medium equipment; performs minor welding; services & maintains flood control sluice, flap gates, & pumps; performs some concrete work & plumbing repairs; cleans, repairs & maintains ditches, flumes & drainage channels; maintains ponds, rip-rap & other areas; assists in hike & bike trail maintenance; applies pesticides; mows levee & trims trees, grass, weeds & shrubbery. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible work in the construction, maintenance & repair of public facilities or similar activities. Requirements: Must live within a 40-minute response time; must possess a valid Kansas CDL Class B driver’s license with air brakes & tanker endorsements. Starting pay: $14.57-16.32/hr. (Full pay range: $14.57-23.26/hr.)

SANITATION WORKER / DRIVER
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Sanitation-Duties: Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of refuse and/or recycling materials; operates medium equipment & heavy duty trucks including refuse/recycling trucks & other trucks over 27 ton capacity; dumps refuse carts; lifts heavy cans of refuse; picks up brush with brush truck; makes special pick-ups for discarded furniture & other refuse; keeps track of time for billing customers; checks oil; washes trucks; performs minor repairs to equipment used; cleans inside of garage; makes repairs to refuse carts; prepares minimal records of own activities; supervises & uses equipment of materials requiring care to assure against breakdown; snow & ice removal. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: One (1) year sanitation work or experience with small trucks & light equipment in construction, maintenance, or related activities; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; heavy manual labor & outside work experience desired. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement; must be able to perform heavy manual labor & run designated routes; must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Work Type: Heavy manual labor, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds for force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Starting pay: $13.85-15.51/hr. (Full pay range: $13.85-22.11/hr.)

STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER
Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Streets & Traffic-Duties: Performs a variety of unskilled & semi-skilled manual labor in the construction & maintenance of streets, storm sewers, buildings & other municipal facilities; drives various types of trucks & operates light construction equipment; lays & rakes asphalt; performs & assists in carpentry, including construction of forms, concrete work, painting & minor welding; responds to weather & other emergencies; snow & ice removal. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: One (1) year construction or maintenance work preferred. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brakes & tanker endorsements, or must be able to obtain CDL within three (3) months from the start date of employment. Work Type: Very heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Hours: Workweek generally Monday - Friday. Starting pay: $13.20-14.78/hr. (Full pay range: $13.20-21.06/hr.)

UTILITIES DEPARTMENT

DEPUTY UTILITIES DIRECTOR
Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities-Duties: Acts as Director of Utilities in Director’s absence; oversees & manages the operations of water (distribution & treatment) & wastewater (collection & treatment) systems under the direction of the Director of Utilities; supervises staff; performs engineering & financial analysis; assists with preparation of operating & capital budgets; reviews engineering submittals; gathers & maintains information to support periodic & special reports; attends or conducts staff, committee, & other professional meetings; makes presentations to City Commission & other boards & commissions; serves on the City’s Development Review Team (DRT). Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering from an ABET accredited university or a closely related engineering field; must possess a Professional Engineer License, issued by the State of Kansas, or have the ability to obtain registration within six months if licensed in another state. Experience: Eight (8) years of progressively responsible engineering experience with water & wastewater functions; four (4) years of supervisory or administrative experience. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Starting pay: $69,368-77,692/yr. (Full pay range: $69,368-116,002/yr.)

UTILITY ENGINEERING TECH III
Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities-Duties: Performs work in technical field & office engineering work relating to sanitary sewer & water utilities; reviews plans & specifications for both private developments & utility projects for compliance with pertinent regulatory requirements, ordinances, & accepted engineering practices; conducts field inspections; prepares project conceptual designs; prepares engineering estimates of utility projects; develops technical construction plans & specifications for installation of a water & wastewater system; performs work associated with CADD, GIS, WaterGEMS, Beehive, & other technical software systems. Education: Associates degree in mechanical, sanitary or civil engineering technology or related field. Experience: Four (4) years of experience in technical civil engineering work and/or drafting. Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Starting pay: $20.44-22.89/hr. (Full pay range: $20.44-32.62/hr.)

WATER PLANT SUPERVISOR
Application deadline: Until filled- Duties: Supervises the operation & maintenance of the City of Salina’s Water Treatment Plant; performs a wide variety of work in the operation & maintenance of water treatment facilities, including lime softening water treatment plant, wells, booster pump stations, water storage facilities, & river intake; supervises 12-15 water plant operators & personnel; prepares employee shift schedules & work assignments; evaluates personnel performance as required; assists in preparing, analyzing, & filing of paper & digital operational, state, & federal reports; assists in long-range planning, budget preparation, & budget control; utilizes computer based software as necessary to complete assignments; administers safety program; investigates accidents & recommends preventative actions; acts as liaison with maintenance, laboratory, & operations personnel to assure the treated water meets established standards of quality. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.; must possess a Kansas Class IV Water Supply System Operator Certificate, or be able to obtain certification within one (1) year after Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) examination eligibility. Experience: Five (5) years of progressive experience in lime softening water treatment or related work preferred; two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Starting pay: $20.44-22.89/hr. (Full pay range: $20.44-32.62/hr.)

UTILITY WORKER I
Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities-Duties: Performs semi-skilled & skilled labor in the maintenance & operation of a water distribution & transmission system/ wastewater collection system; performs minor electrical & mechanical maintenance; maintains wastewater pumps, motors & controls; installs, repairs, cleans, taps, fits & inspects wastewater/water pipelines; installs & repairs wastewater/ water valves, manholes, & fire hydrants; installs & repairs chemical feed pumps & piping; performs custodial work such as cleaning, painting, lawn mowing & snow removal. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Two (2) years maintenance of mechanical & electrical equipment, or related work preferred. WATER PLANT OPERATOR I
Application deadline: TH 04/09/2020–Utilities-Duties: Performs skilled work in the operation of an advanced water treatment plant & operation of related equipment; monitors & operates motors, pumps, chemical feeders & related equipment; operates valves; utilizes monitoring equipment & records information shown; keeps daily log of shift operations; collects samples for laboratory tests & assists with analysis; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; performs custodial work such as cleaning, painting & mowing; receives & addresses customer concerns. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.; must possess Kansas Class I Water Supply System Operator Certificate within one (1) year of KDHE exam eligibility. Experience: Two (2) years’ maintenance of mechanical & electrical equipment, or related work. Requirements: Must live within 40-minutes response time; must possess valid Kansas driver’s license. Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Hours: Works on shift: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; midnight to noon; noon to midnight. Starting pay: $16.82-18.84/hr. (Full pay range: $16.82-26.83/hr.)

SALINA FIRE DEPARTMENT

FIREFIGHTER / PARAMEDIC

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. FIREFIGHTER / EMT
