Position Title:
Mechanic / Street Laborer

Position Summary: The City of Abilene Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full time Mechanic/Street Laborer at 40 hours a week with the potential for intermittent overtime. This position is responsible for performing minor mechanical repairs and periodic service work on City owned vehicles and construction equipment, as well as maintaining maintenance records and operating departmental equipment in the maintenance of streets, signs and flood control structures. A Class A Commercial Drivers License will be required within 6 months of employment. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a valid Kansas drivers license. A high school diploma or G.E.D. is also required.

Job Description:

Summary:
Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Mechanic/Street Laborer is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This position is responsible for the maintenance and repairs to departmental equipment. Also scheduling maintenance on city owned vehicles from other departments is required. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and good communication skills.

Essential Job Functions:
Performs minor mechanical repairs and routine service work on department machinery and City owned vehicles;
Manages and maintains accurate equipment maintenance records;
Maintains shop in a clean and organized manner;
Safely and effectively operate and maintain all departmental equipment;
Performs all routine street maintenance practices;
Responds to emergency call outs.
Ancillary Job Functions:
Assists other departments as the need arises;
Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and a valid Kansas Driver's License is required. Employee is required to obtain a Class A Kansas Commercial Drivers License within 6 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (Not all inclusive)
Knowledge of auto mechanics, equipment repair and maintenance techniques are required. This employee must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, ability to learn to operate departmental equipment. The ability to read and interpret written instructions, repair manuals and a strong mechanical aptitude is required.

Work Environment: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals is expected

Physical Abilities: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy equipment and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required to perform the daily duties of this position.
